Watt Brothers Talk Beating The Heat In Gatorade Public Service Announcements

Just in time for summer football practice, the NFL’s current First Family, the Watt Brothers – J.J., Derek and T.J. – have a message for athletes about working out in the heat. Gatorade and the Watt brothers teamed up to create two “vintage” public service announcements to educate athletes on the importance of hydration and heat safety.  The Watt boys’ personalities are just what you’d expect out of three siblings:
  • As the oldest, Houston Texans Defensive Linemen, J.J.’s leadership and reliability shine
  • Derek – middle brother and San Diego Chargers Fullback – aims to please
  • The youngest – Pittsburgh Steelers Linebacker, T.J. – is…outgoing and uncomplicated
The PSAs are part of the 14th annual Gatorade “Beat the Heat” program, which educates athletes across all sports about the importance of hydration during the hot, summer months. Both videos are below:
  • Color of Hydration: After a colorful debate in a bathroom, the brothers look to their dad to explain the “color of hydration” – using your urine color to determine if you’re properly hydrated.

  • Dress for Sweat-cess: As the brothers train outside, J.J. and Derek impart wisdom on T.J. about the importance of dressing for sweat-cess – knowing to wear lighter colored, sweat wicking clothing to stay safe in the heat.

And because this is Gatorade’s first scripted content for the Beat the Heat program, you can see how much fun the boys had making them by checking out this outtake reel.
Research shows that dehydration or poor hydration can impair performance and increase the risk for heat illness (i). To minimize the risk of fluid imbalances, athletes should take frequent hydration breaks, preferably in the shade where possible, and monitor for symptoms of heat illness which may include nausea, headache, fatigue, rapid heart rate or shortness of breath. Not only does Gatorade give you fluids for hydration and electrolytes to replenish what’s lost in sweat, but also carbohydrates to help you compete.
Heat Safety Tips
A few simple tips to help you young athletes stay safe during the hot and humid summer months:
  1. Start hydrating well before you step on the court/field.
  2. If you’re thirsty, you may already be dehydrated and putting yourself in danger. Once you feel dehydrated, it may be too late.
  3. Dress for the weather. If possible, wear lighter colored, sweat wicking clothing.
  4. If you’re not feeling well, speak up immediately.
