While most people look back at high school fondly, for students at five of Montreal’s alternative schools, it’s the hardest time in their lives. Severe learning disabilities have caused regular high schools to give up on them and in turn, they’ve given up on themselves. These are the kids are never expected to graduate high school and are lost causes, but a few coaches refused to give up on these kids. Wanting to give the students a chance to feel good at something, they combined their efforts to create a basketball team comprised of students from five different alternative schools. For it to work, they needed the kids to start believing in themselves. However, there were countless other obstacles that stood in their way. The effects of this team will last long into the future and leave them with something positive that they can look back on. When everyone assumed their lives would go one way, sport has made all the difference.
